Bing and ChatGPT Visibility: Check Listings, Website Access and Actual Results

·2 min read

A business listing and a searchable website serve different purposes. Keep both accurate, but do not assume that completing one profile guarantees recommendations across every search or AI service.

Separate the three jobs

  • Use Bing Places to manage the business information people can encounter in Bing search and maps.
  • Use Bing Webmaster Tools to investigate your website's discovery, indexing and reported search performance.
  • Check the requirements and actual results of each AI search service separately.

OpenAI's search documentation describes working with other search providers and using location to improve local results. It also directs website owners to allow OAI-Searchbot and its published IP addresses. This does not establish Bing Places as a mandatory gateway to ChatGPT recommendations, and placement is not guaranteed.

Investigate website access before drawing conclusions

In Bing Webmaster Tools, inspect important service pages and review reported crawl or indexing problems. A submitted sitemap helps discovery; it does not prove that every listed page is indexed. Bing's index troubleshooting guidance explains that pages must still be crawled and assessed.

Ask the person maintaining your website to investigate inaccessible pages, unintended indexing restrictions and content that crawlers cannot reliably render. Record the specific URL, observed problem and verification after a fix. Avoid promising a regular crawl schedule simply because ownership has been verified.

Measure each outcome separately

Keep a dated record of search questions, location context, returned businesses and cited URLs. A result from one question is an observation, not your share of an entire market. Review referral traffic and recorded inquiries separately from citation counts.

Bing's AI Performance report provides citation information for supported AI experiences. Its grounding queries are phrases used to retrieve content, and the reported query data is sampled. Do not treat them as a complete list of customer prompts or booked jobs.

Prioritize problems you can verify: an incorrect phone number, an inaccessible service page or an outdated business claim. Recheck the same evidence after correcting it, while allowing for changes in demand and search results.
