Competitor Keywords in Google Ads: Evaluate Intent, Policy, and Results

·3 min read

A search for another business does not prove the person is comparing providers. They may be an existing customer seeking support, checking an appointment, or looking for contact details. Treat competitor-keyword advertising as a testable opportunity rather than guaranteed access to uncommitted buyers.

Understand the platform policy

Google's trademark policy does not restrict using trademarks as keywords. Its ad-text review considers how a trademark is used, including use by a direct competitor and confusing or misleading use, following a trademark complaint.

This is not blanket legal permission or a claim that every mention automatically produces an account strike. Review the policy and any applicable rights before using another business's name. Clearly identify the actual advertiser and avoid implying affiliation.

Set a bounded business test

Document the services and locations you can support, the intended searches, the spending limit, and what counts as a qualified inquiry. A separate campaign may help manage distinct spending or targeting requirements, but no fixed budget or bidding strategy fits every account.

Choose match types and exclusions deliberately, then review the available queries. Do not assume a name in the keyword list guarantees only the intended branded searches. Investigate mistaken-identity calls separately from genuine inquiries.

Use accurate copy and a clear destination

Explain your own service and next step using verified facts. Do not invent emergency availability, dispatch times, guarantees, review counts, or years in business. The destination should make it clear which business the visitor has reached.

Request information needed to handle the inquiry. There is no supported universal percentage loss for every additional form field. Evaluate the full customer experience and lead quality rather than optimizing submission count alone.

Read performance in context

Quality Score is a keyword-level diagnostic and is not used as an input in the auction. Do not claim competitor keywords automatically lower every service keyword's score.

The search terms report describes observed campaign activity and omits some low-activity queries for privacy. Impressions depend on your targeting and delivery; they are not a census of competitor searches or proof of competitors' market shares.

Compare spending with qualified inquiries and booked work, allowing for delayed outcomes. Lower click cost alone does not establish profitable acquisition. Correct misleading copy, broken tracking, or unwanted spending promptly rather than waiting for an arbitrary test period to end.

Expand only if the observed economics and business capacity support it. If the data is sparse or the result uncertain, report that limitation instead of declaring that competitor campaigns always work.
