Google Local and AI Search: Check What Customers Actually See
Before changing your local search strategy, distinguish an observed result from a claim about an entire market. Seeing an AI answer for one query does not establish that it has replaced local map results everywhere, or that the same layout appears for every customer.
Keep local search fundamentals in place
Google's local ranking guidance describes relevance, distance and prominence, including how well-known a business is. It recommends complete, accurate business information. A new search presentation is not a reason to neglect your Business Profile or publish inaccurate services and hours.
Google's AI search guidance says established SEO practices remain relevant. AI Mode and AI Overviews can show different responses and links, and inclusion is not guaranteed. Do not treat a particular directory count, review quota or opening-paragraph length as a published eligibility requirement.
Record the result before interpreting it
For a useful local comparison, record the query, location context, date, device and search experience used. Note whether you saw map results, an AI Overview, an AI Mode response or another feature. Save the visible businesses and supporting links separately.
If you report a frequency, disclose the number of observations and how you chose the queries. A sample built around one service and location should not be presented as the share of all US contractor searches. Changes in the sample can change the result even when your business has not changed.
Improve information customers need
Make service pages clear about the work offered, geographic coverage and how to contact the business. State credentials, availability and response times only when verified. Correct outdated facts on profiles you manage. Useful information does not need an invented ranking guarantee to justify maintaining it.
Keep reviews independent. Google's review policy prohibits requesting specific content. Invite genuine feedback without telling customers which service, city or outcome to include, and do not supply a sentence designed to influence search results.
Measure inquiries separately from visibility
Use search and website reporting alongside actual inquiry and booking records. Google's AI features are included in Search Console's Web search reporting; do not label all Google organic traffic as traffic from AI answers.
A business name appearing in a result is an observation. A website visit, an inquiry and a booked job are separate outcomes. Compare them carefully before attributing a business improvement to a particular page edit or search layout.
