Choose Business Profile Categories That Accurately Describe Your Business

·2 min read

Your Business Profile category should describe what your business actually does. Review an inaccurate selection, but do not treat a category change as a guaranteed ranking shortcut.

Follow Google's category guidance

Google recommends choosing a specific primary category that best describes the business. Select from the available list. If the specific option is absent, choose an accurate broader category; you cannot create your own.

Use a few additional categories to describe the business rather than adding one for every product or service. Do not select categories for work you do not perform.

Keep research claims in context

Whitespark's 2026 survey places primary category first in its contributor-ranked Local Pack factors. That describes the contributors' assessment. It does not reveal a fixed percentage of Google's algorithm or predict the result for your business.

A competitor's category can suggest an option to investigate. It does not establish why that competitor appears in a particular search. Compare the option with your actual operation before considering a change.

Document a justified correction

Record the current categories, the inaccurate or missing description, the proposed selection, and why it fits. Check the live picker instead of relying on a static list of trade names from an article.

Google's instructions place category editing under Edit profile and warn that adding or changing a category may require business verification again. Follow any verification request shown in the account rather than assuming the change will be immediate.

Evaluate without promising causation

Save the change date and compare relevant observations over time. Keep the query and location context consistent when checking results. Record other changes that could affect discovery.

An increase or decrease following an edit is not, by itself, proof that the category caused it. Avoid repeatedly switching categories to chase a single result or filling unused slots to reach a supposed optimum.

Review category accuracy again when the business changes. Track inquiries and booked work separately from search visibility, and retain only categories that truthfully describe the business.
