Demand Gen for Contractors: Plan the Audience, Budget, and Measurement

·3 min read

Demand Gen is an advertising option to evaluate against a specific business objective. Do not assume that every impression reaches a homeowner weeks before a purchase or that adding the campaign will reduce your total acquisition cost.

Check current channels and available controls

Google's channel-control documentation lists YouTube, Gmail, Discover, Maps, and the Google Display Network. Availability depends on the ad type, audience, and campaign settings. At the ad-group level, you can select channels manually or use automatic selection.

Record the settings actually available in your account. Select channels for a clear test purpose and check delivery afterward. Do not equate a selected channel with guaranteed reach or a guaranteed share of spending.

Define the audience you intend to reach

Review the current audience options, including Google-estimated segments and eligible data segments. Check optimized targeting and other expansion settings before describing a campaign as restricted to previous visitors.

Verify the list's source, eligibility, size, and applicable permissions. Use accurate service locations and language settings. A segment name or keyword input is not proof that every recipient is a homeowner seeking your service.

Confirm the conversion definition

Write down what the campaign should achieve and which conversion actions represent it. Test that successful inquiries reach the business and that duplicate events are handled correctly. Keep button clicks, submitted forms, connected calls, qualified leads, and booked jobs distinct.

Choose any call-duration threshold from the business's actual qualification process. Duration alone does not establish that a caller needs the service. Review attribution settings and reconcile reported conversions with available business records.

Set the spending decision before launch

Google's campaign setup supports daily or total budgets and enforces minimum values. Check the requirements presented for your configuration and agree on a test budget, dates, and stopping conditions before spending.

Use supported creative formats for the selected ad type. Confirm rights to photographs and video, and verify every offer or result claim. Test the landing page and inquiry flow before enabling the campaign.

Evaluate what the test can establish

Keep a record of spend, settings, creative, reporting dates, and changes during the test. Assess qualified-lead cost and business outcomes, not only inexpensive clicks or views. Investigate low delivery rather than assuming that waiting a fixed number of days will solve it.

A rise in branded searches or later inquiries is not, by itself, proof that Demand Gen caused the change. If incremental impact is the question, plan an appropriate comparison and account for other marketing and demand changes. Report inconclusive results honestly instead of substituting an industry benchmark for evidence from your campaign.
