Microsoft Copilot: Check Your Business Information and Website Citations
If you want to understand how your business appears in Microsoft Copilot, check three things separately: the accuracy of your business information, whether Bing can discover your website, and the citations you can actually observe.
Maintain your business information
Microsoft's AI Performance announcement recommends Bing Places for keeping details such as address, hours, and contact information current and eligible for inclusion in AI-generated responses. That does not promise a recommendation for a particular trade or city.
Start at Bing's business portal. Check for an existing business before creating another listing, and follow the verification options offered to your account. Review your name, contact details, services, hours, and applicable categories for accuracy.
Describe only locations you serve and credentials you can substantiate. Use genuine photographs you have permission to publish. Do not treat a character count or photo quota as a documented Copilot eligibility threshold.
Inspect website discovery separately
Use Bing URL Inspection to check important pages and investigate reported issues. Site Explorer provides a broader view of discovered and indexed URLs. Keep the reported indexing state separate from the result of testing a live page.
Submit an accurate sitemap and investigate relevant access or indexing restrictions. Bing's guidelines explain that sitemaps do not guarantee visibility. Do not promise that submission will produce indexing or a citation within a fixed number of days.
When diagnosing a problem, record the affected URL, reported issue, and corrective action. Avoid inferring a specific technical cause from one missing recommendation.
Read citation reports within their limits
The AI Performance report shows aggregated citation activity across supported Copilot, Bing AI, and selected partner experiences. Review the cited URLs, date range, and associated grounding phrases.
The report is sampled, and very sparse activity may not appear. Grounding phrases summarize retrieval activity; they are not exact user questions. Citation counts do not establish a page's ranking or importance, and a change in the chart does not prove that one edit caused it.
Inspect actual answers
Record the product, date, location context, wording of your question, answer, and cited URLs. Keep a direct question about your business separate from an unprompted request for a local contractor recommendation.
Open the cited pages and check whether they support the business details in the answer. Correct an identifiable source error where you control it. A thin answer alone does not tell you that a particular listing field or review platform caused the result.
Respect review policies
Yelp instructs businesses not to ask for reviews. Do not text customers asking them to write Yelp reviews or supply service names, locations, and outcomes for an AI-search tactic.
Keep observed business mentions, website citations, identifiable referral visits, qualified inquiries, and completed work in separate records. Use those records to choose specific improvements without presenting a profile checklist as a guarantee that Copilot will recommend you.
