Performance Max Setup for Contractors: Define Goals, Pages, and Controls

·3 min read

Before launching or changing a standard Performance Max campaign, write down what a useful outcome means for your business. Then review the campaign settings against that definition. A contractor booking installation estimates may need different measurement from one handling urgent repair calls.

Define the outcome before the conversion action

Decide whether the campaign should optimize for a submitted inquiry, a qualified lead, an appointment, or another verifiable business outcome. Check the evidence and reporting delay for the chosen action.

Google distinguishes primary and secondary conversion actions, but actions in custom goals can be used for bidding regardless of that label. Inspect both the action and the campaign's selected goals using Google's conversion guidance.

Do not automatically demote form submissions or assume every call over 60 seconds is qualified. Compare real outcomes with the proposed measurement rule. Record its limitations and check that duplicate tags or imports do not count the same event twice unintentionally.

Plan coherent creative and landing pages

Group messaging around a clear service or customer need when that helps you create accurate, useful ads. Keep the offer, imagery, and page content consistent. Record which services and locations each creative set describes rather than promising universal gains from one asset-group structure.

Check Final URL expansion explicitly. When enabled, Google may choose another relevant page on your site and generate matching text. A page feed does not, by itself, limit destinations to the feed while expansion is on. Review URL expansion and page-feed behavior before assuming every click reaches the URL you supplied.

Exclude unsuitable destinations where appropriate and verify the configured final URL itself. Google's URL exclusion guidance notes that an expansion exclusion cannot block the campaign's own final URL.

Separate brand decisions from keyword exclusions

Decide whether this campaign should participate in searches for your business name. Brand lists and negative keyword lists are different controls. Google's brand settings guidance explains how brand lists handle variants, while its negative keyword guidance addresses unwanted terms.

Record the purpose and scope of each exclusion. Do not assume every branded conversion would have happened without advertising, or that an exclusion must improve overall results. Evaluate the change against the campaign's objective.

Check audience-data permissions

Audience signals are optional suggestions, and Google can serve beyond them. See the audience-signal documentation. Do not promise a fixed learning period from a particular list size.

Before uploading customer information, verify account eligibility, first-party collection, privacy disclosures, and required consent under Google's Customer Match policy. Document what data is permitted for this purpose instead of exporting every address in the CRM automatically.

Record budget and review criteria

Write down the spending limit, bidding choice, reason for any target, and the person responsible for monitoring it. Do not apply an automatic sequence of percentage reductions merely because a campaign reached an arbitrary conversion count.

Use the channel performance report alongside qualified leads and completed work. Review recent data with its reporting and booking delays in mind. Correct known configuration problems promptly, record changes, and judge the campaign against measured business outcomes rather than a promised setup formula.
