Perplexity, Reddit, and Yelp: Check Sources Before Choosing a Tactic
Before changing your marketing plan around Perplexity, inspect the sources in answers relevant to your business. A citation study can suggest places to investigate, but it does not establish a fixed source hierarchy for every trade and city.
Read the denominator in citation studies
Profound's citation report analyzed data from August 2024 through June 2025. It reported Reddit at 6.6% of Perplexity citations overall, compared with 46.7% of citations within its ten leading sources. Those are different denominators.
Neither figure establishes the current share of contractor recommendations in your service area. Record a study's date, sample, and comparison before using it to justify a business decision.
Review answers without supplying the answer yourself
Choose realistic questions about your services and location. Record the wording, date, product settings, response, and cited URLs. Open each relevant source and check whether it supports the business name, service, or credential stated.
Keep a direct request to inspect your website separate from an ordinary recommendation question. Pasting your page into the prompt supplies information the system might not otherwise retrieve; it does not prove that homeowners will discover you independently.
Use Reddit to understand real questions
Read relevant discussions for questions customers ask and problems they report. Do not conclude that a thread you found is necessarily being used for every local recommendation.
Before participating, follow the community's rules and Reddit's guidance. Be clear about your relationship to a business. Do not pose as a customer or organize artificial recommendations to manufacture a source.
Keep Yelp accurate without soliciting reviews
Check your business details and correct substantive errors through the available business-account tools. Describe only services, locations, and credentials that are accurate.
Yelp tells businesses not to ask for reviews, including requests to customers. Do not send review requests or set a monthly Yelp review quota as a Perplexity tactic.
Maintain useful information when the business changes. Do not assume that a new review or a small page edit resets a documented six-month Perplexity eligibility clock.
Verify technical access separately
Perplexity's crawler documentation describes PerplexityBot for search discovery and Perplexity-User for user-requested visits. Check robots rules, hosting controls, and the relevant published IP ranges when investigating access.
A request's user-agent alone does not authenticate it. A successful authenticated fetch is evidence of access, not proof of indexing, citation, or recommendation. Submitting a URL elsewhere is also not proof that Perplexity retrieved it.
Measure what happens after discovery
Keep observed citations, identifiable referral visits, qualified inquiries, and booked work in separate fields. Record unknown attribution rather than assigning every unexplained inquiry to AI search.
Choose the next action from the evidence: correct an inaccurate profile, resolve a verified access issue, or improve an unclear service explanation. Avoid promising that a source checklist will produce a recommendation or a higher-converting lead.
