Perplexity Visibility for Contractors: Check Access, Facts and Sources
Perplexity can answer questions using information from multiple sources. To assess your business's visibility, inspect actual answers and the pages they cite rather than assuming that one directory or a fixed number of reviews controls the result.
Record the answer before diagnosing it
Choose a question about a service you offer in a place you serve. Record the exact wording, date, search mode and location context. Note whether your business is mentioned, recommended or cited through its website; these are different outcomes.
Open the source links and check what they support. A competitor's appearance beside a Yelp citation does not prove that matching its review count would produce the same result for you. Keep the observation separate from an explanation of its cause.
Check access to your own pages
Perplexity's crawler documentation recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt and permitting requests from its published IP ranges. Ask your website maintainer to investigate unintended blocks and confirm that important public pages can be retrieved.
Passing an access check does not guarantee a recommendation. Record the URL, the issue found and the verification after any fix instead of promising a citation deadline.
Correct facts customers rely on
Review your website and the actual sources cited for your business. Check services, locations, phone numbers, availability and pricing claims. Publish only offers and credentials that your team can support.
Explain service scope clearly and put useful information where readers can find it. Do not copy another company's response-time promise or force every answer into a prescribed opening word count. Perplexity's description of its search process does not establish such a format as a universal eligibility rule.
Respect review and community rules
Yelp prohibits soliciting reviews. Do not run a Yelp review-request campaign to meet an assumed Perplexity threshold. Check other platforms' current rules before requesting feedback there.
If you contribute to Reddit, follow its rules and the rules of the specific community. Be transparent about a relevant business connection. Do not manufacture independent endorsements or treat someone else's recommendation as proof of a guaranteed citation benefit.
Review changes using evidence
Repeat documented questions after factual or technical corrections, preserving the original observations. Compare website referrals and recorded inquiries separately from mentions. A change in an answer may warrant investigation, but it does not establish that a particular profile edit caused more leads.
