Google and AI Search: Compare Channels Using Your Own Customer Evidence

·2 min read

Customers can use conventional search results, AI answers and several other sources while choosing a contractor. To decide where to focus your effort, start with evidence from your own business rather than assuming an industry-wide percentage describes your market.

Distinguish the search experiences

Google AI Overviews appears within Google Search. Treating both as completely separate traffic channels can lead to double counting. Review the definitions of the reports you use before combining their numbers.

ChatGPT search can use web sources and search providers to answer questions. Perplexity also describes searching and synthesizing sources. Neither description establishes which service your own customers prefer.

Keep three types of evidence separate

  • Search observations show whether the business or its website appeared in a particular result.
  • Website analytics records measurable visits and actions, subject to the tracking available.
  • Business records show inquiries, booked work and other outcomes your team has recorded.

A customer may encounter several sources before visiting your site. A recorded referral does not necessarily reveal the whole journey. Keep unknown sources visible rather than assigning them to whichever channel you are trying to evaluate.

Use common fundamentals without universal promises

Maintain accurate service information, readable pages and functioning contact routes. Check crawl access separately for the services you want to be available to. Use structured data only where appropriate and consistent with the visible facts.

Google's AI guidance does not promise inclusion from a special format. FAQs, reviews and markup should not be sold as guarantees that every AI system will recommend the business.

Make changes you can evaluate

Document the problem, proposed change and evidence you will check afterward. Compare relevant periods and note changes in demand, capacity and advertising. A broad platform trend can suggest a question to investigate; it does not by itself justify moving your budget or claiming that a channel produced a booked job.
