Remarketing for Contractors: Verify Audience Eligibility and Measure Added Value

·3 min read

A previous website visit can provide context for an advertising test. It does not prove someone is still shopping, has not called, or is certain to become a customer if shown another ad.

Define the audience and purpose

Decide whether the campaign is intended to reach previous visitors, existing customers, or new prospects using those groups as signals. These purposes require different interpretation of the results.

Google's optimized targeting can reach beyond selected audience segments. Review the actual controls before describing a campaign as serving only previous visitors.

Use available, reliable outcome data when defining exclusions. A person who did not submit a tracked form may still have contacted the business through another route.

Confirm that the segment can serve

Google's data-segment requirements currently specify 100 active visitors or users within 30 days for Search and Display, with qualifications for legacy customer lists. Total site visits are not the same as eligible active audience members.

Verify the data source, permissions, rules, network eligibility, and segment status. Do not promise that a particular traffic volume will activate an audience within a fixed number of weeks.

Choose membership duration based on the purpose of the audience. It controls how long people remain in the segment; it is not the campaign's start or end date.

Use customer data appropriately

Customer Match policy includes account eligibility, feature restrictions, first-party data requirements, disclosures, and applicable consent. Uploading an existing customer database does not bypass these requirements.

Keep updates and removals current. Use accurate service messaging rather than assuming every previous customer has the same next need or willingness to pay.

Check bidding and observation settings

Google's Observation setting does not restrict campaign reach. It can support reporting and eligible first-party signals for Smart Bidding.

Review bid adjustment compatibility before adding audience percentages. Ordinary manual audience modifiers are not used by Smart Bidding. A higher bid in a supported setup also does not guarantee an auction win or unchanged spending.

Measure the business contribution

Use truthful creative, working destinations, and an affordable test limit. Review repetition and relevance rather than assuming one frequency cap is optimal for every service.

Compare qualified inquiries, bookings, and acquisition costs. Previous visitors may differ from new visitors before any additional advertising occurs, so their higher observed conversion rate does not by itself prove remarketing caused the difference.

Document comparison methods and limitations. Report attributed conversions separately from evidence of additional customers, and expand only when the results and service capacity support it.
