FAQ Content and Schema for Contractors: What Helps Customers and What to Measure

·3 min read

A useful FAQ helps a customer understand your service before contacting you. Start with questions your team actually receives, then provide accurate answers about what is included, what affects a quote, how scheduling works, and what customers should prepare.

Keep the content useful even if no search engine displays it as a special result. Google's guidance for generative search does not require special schema, a particular writing format, or content split into prescribed chunks. Read Google's AI search guidance.

Write answers your business can stand behind

Use actual service details and verified business policies. If you publish prices, explain the scope and conditions and confirm that the figures are current. If a quote depends on an inspection, explain what needs to be assessed rather than inventing a price range.

Give a direct answer where possible, followed by the detail needed to understand it. There is no universal answer length that guarantees an AI citation. Do not remove important qualifications simply to fit a word-count target. Questions about safety, technical diagnosis, or regulated work need appropriate expertise and care.

Separate the visible FAQ from its markup

Question-and-answer content and FAQPage markup are different things. The visible content serves the reader. Structured data describes information in a machine-readable format and must agree with what the page actually says.

Google stopped displaying FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026. Adding FAQPage markup does not restore that feature. Existing accurate markup can be evaluated for other uses, but it should not be sold as a requirement for Google AI visibility or a guaranteed citation improvement. See Google's FAQ retirement notice and structured data guidelines.

Check access using the relevant platform's documentation

Useful content still needs to be accessible to the systems that may retrieve it. For Google, review normal Search foundations such as crawl access, indexing eligibility, and clear internal links. For automatic ChatGPT search crawling, OAI-SearchBot is the relevant OpenAI crawler. GPTBot relates to training and is controlled separately.

Allowing a crawler does not promise inclusion or a recommendation. Check access and firewall behavior against current documentation rather than assuming all AI platforms use the same process. See OpenAI's crawler roles and Google's search guidance.

Validate the page and measure observations

  1. Review the visible answers against current service information and evidence. Add supporting sources where they help customers assess a claim.
  2. If structured data is included, confirm that it matches the visible answers. Use the Schema.org validator for vocabulary checks and Google's Rich Results Test for currently supported Google features.
  3. Record the page change and date. When checking AI answers, record the platform, question, date, location or other relevant context, and any cited URL. Treat the result as an observation, not a universal visibility score.
  4. Compare observed mentions and citations with search traffic, referrals, and qualified enquiries where measurement is available. Avoid attributing every change to schema when other content or market conditions also changed.

Open the Schema.org validator or Google's Rich Results Test. The aim is useful, verifiable information and measurable outcomes. No fixed percentage or timetable can be promised from adding FAQ markup alone.
