Negative Keywords for Contractors: Exclude Unwanted Searches Carefully

·3 min read

Negative keywords help exclude unwanted searches. A useful audit starts with the services a business actually offers and the inquiries it can serve, rather than a universal list or promised percentage saving.

Identify clear mismatches

Look for searches about unrelated services, employment when the campaign is selling services, or equipment the business does not support. Read the full query before deciding what to exclude.

Words such as free, cheap, parts, or tile are not universally irrelevant. A free-estimate offer or tile-roof service could be blocked by an overly broad exclusion. A person researching a repair may still choose to hire a professional.

Use the available search evidence

Google's search terms report omits some low-activity queries for privacy. Inspect high-spend terms, but do not describe the visible rows as every query that triggered an ad.

Record the reason a query is unsuitable, its observed cost, and any relevant inquiry outcome. Zero conversions alone does not prove irrelevance, particularly with limited data or delayed bookings.

Do not multiply a selected historical cost total into guaranteed annual savings. Future volume, auction conditions, and the effect of each exclusion remain uncertain.

Choose negative match types deliberately

Google's negative keyword guidance distinguishes negative matching from positive keyword matching. Negative broad, phrase, and exact rules affect how much of a query must match.

Synonyms and singular or plural forms may need separate entries. Casing and misspellings are handled automatically. Review the current rules and intended blocked searches before saving an exclusion.

Apply the right scope

Account-level negatives in account settings apply across relevant Search and Shopping inventory. Reserve that scope for searches unsuitable throughout the account.

A shared negative keyword list is applied to selected campaigns. Creating the list does not automatically make it account-wide. Confirm its actual associations and whether other campaigns offer a service the list would exclude.

Google's current Performance Max instructions support campaign negatives and selection of an existing list. Those negatives apply to Search and Shopping inventory, not every placement across the campaign's channels.

Verify effects and maintain the list

Save the original settings and reason for each change. Check that the intended campaigns received the exclusions and that useful service or brand searches were not inadvertently blocked.

Review qualified inquiries, bookings, and acquisition costs alongside traffic changes. Fewer clicks do not establish better results if useful demand was removed too.

Use a review cadence appropriate to spending and volume, and revisit exclusions when services or offers change. Negative keywords require maintenance; they are not a permanent guarantee against every unsuitable inquiry.
