GEO and SEO: Compare the Work, Not Just the Labels
When comparing SEO and GEO services, ask what will actually be checked, improved and measured. An acronym is not a deliverable, and neither label guarantees a ranking, citation or customer.
Understand the overlap
Google describes SEO as helping search engines understand content and helping people discover a site. That includes accessible pages, useful information and clear organization. It is broader than selecting keywords for a list of blue links.
GEO focuses attention on generated answers: whether a business or source appears, how it is described, and what supports the answer. Google's AI feature guidance says established SEO practices remain applicable. Do not assume a separate technical package is mandatory merely because a result uses AI.
Ask for a concrete scope

| Work area | Useful deliverable |
|---|---|
| Technical access | Documented crawl or indexing problems, corrections and verification |
| Business information | Accurate service, coverage, contact and credential details |
| Content | Helpful answers supported by current evidence |
| AI observations | A defined sample, cited sources and factual errors found |
| Business measurement | Visits, qualified inquiries and booked work with attribution limits stated |
Prioritize problems you can establish. A blocked service page, an inaccurate phone number or an unsupported claim warrants attention. A proposed percentage split between SEO and GEO does not explain what your business needs.
Set realistic timing and reporting
Google's starter guide explains that the time before changes have an effect varies, and some changes may have no noticeable search impact. A provider can set a deadline for completing work without promising when a search system will reflect it.
Keep mentions, source citations, website visits and leads separate. Google's AI features are included in Search Console's Web search reporting, so an organic click is not automatically attributable to an AI answer. Compare reports using their actual scope rather than adding overlapping figures together.
Evaluate the service by the quality of its implementation, evidence and business reporting. Choose the work that addresses your current gaps, then reassess from observed results.
