Google Ads for Home Services: A Practical Starting Guide

·3 min read

Begin with the service you want to advertise, the area you can serve, and the response your team can reliably provide. Advertising creates opportunities to receive inquiries; it does not guarantee that a searcher is ready to buy or that a campaign will be profitable.

Understand the options

Search campaigns can reach people searching for relevant services. Keyword and bidding choices affect eligibility, but a particular search phrase does not prove buying intent. Review the resulting requests and business outcomes.

Local Services Ads generate leads through options such as calls and messages. Eligibility depends on the category and area, and onboarding requirements vary. A charged lead is not the same as a completed job.

The current Google Verified badge reflects the applicable screening and verification process. Do not describe the former Google Guarantee money-back program as a current benefit.

Performance Max is a goal-based campaign type that accesses Google advertising inventory across channels. Evaluate whether its goals, assets, controls, and reporting fit your needs rather than treating it as an automatic upgrade or simply an awareness campaign.

Plan a test the business can afford

Separate advertising spend from management, creative, measurement, and landing-page costs. Set a spending limit and define what evidence would justify continuing or changing the test.

For illustration only, 20 leads at an assumed $150 each would require $3,000 in advertising spend. This is arithmetic, not a market benchmark or a forecast. The number of booked jobs would still depend on lead quality, response, and the booking rate.

Check Google's average daily budget and overdelivery rules. An average daily budget is not necessarily the amount charged each day. Review the rules applicable to the campaign before translating a monthly spending target into settings.

Choose relevant searches and destinations

Build around services you actually provide. Google's match-type documentation explains meaning-based matching and recommends broad match with Smart Bidding. Phrase and exact match do not mean that only literal wording can trigger an ad.

Choose a structure you can evaluate using reliable conversion data. Review negative keywords carefully so that exclusions do not remove legitimate requests. Check location and schedule settings against service coverage and staffing.

Send visitors to a page that explains the advertised service and makes the next step clear. Test the phone action, form submission, confirmation, and internal handling. Do not promise immediate dispatch when the form only requests a later callback.

Measure the stages separately

Distinguish clicks, inquiries, qualified leads, booked jobs, and completed work. Agree on definitions and remove duplicate or test leads from business reporting.

Ask what measurement covers and where evidence is missing. Google's search terms report omits some low-activity queries for privacy. Do not promise that every customer can be traced to an exact search term or keyword.

Review results and accountability

Set a review cadence suited to spending and lead volume. Investigate failures promptly, while allowing time for delayed outcomes before declaring a winner. Costs do not have to decline every week for a campaign to be useful, and lower cost alone does not establish profitability.

If someone manages the account, agree on access, billing, fees, change reporting, measurement limits, and ownership of the work. Ask for verifiable relevant experience. Judge the arrangement by transparent costs and business results rather than a promise of complete attribution or guaranteed savings.
