What Is GEO? A Home Service Owner's Guide to AI Visibility

·2 min read

GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It describes work intended to improve how information appears in responses from generative search systems. The research introducing GEO studied content visibility in generated answers. That research does not make a particular business's inclusion predictable or guaranteed.

What visibility can mean

An answer might mention your business, link to your website, or cite another page that discusses you. These are different observations. A mention without a source is not a verified endorsement, and a citation does not establish that the answer accurately represents your business.

For a contractor, accuracy matters alongside visibility. Check that an answer describes your actual services, coverage, credentials and availability. Correct outdated information in sources you manage.

Start with accessible, useful information

Make important service information readable on your website and easy to find through navigation. Keep business details current and explain the evidence behind factual claims. Use clear headings because they help people understand a page, not because a particular format guarantees citation.

Check access for the systems you want to reach. OpenAI's search guidance calls for allowing OAI-Searchbot and its published IP addresses through the host or CDN. It also states that placement is not guaranteed.

Google's AI guidance says established SEO practices remain relevant and no special schema is required for its AI features. Structured data should describe the information on the page accurately.

Measure a defined observation

When checking AI answers, record the question, product, date, location context and cited sources. Keep your sample consistent enough to compare, and describe its limitations. A few prompts do not measure the whole market.

Use available platform reports within their stated coverage. For example, Bing's AI Performance report provides citation information across supported experiences. It is not a universal count of AI recommendations or booked jobs.

Track identifiable visits, inquiries and completed sales separately. GEO work can improve the information you publish and reveal errors in how it is used. Its value should be assessed through documented work and observed results, without promising control over another platform's answers.
