Smart Bidding for Contractors: Choose Goals and Verify Conversion Data

·3 min read

Smart Bidding needs a well-defined objective and trustworthy conversion measurement. Conversion volume matters when interpreting performance, but it is not a universal ladder that determines every campaign's strategy.

Check the strategy's actual requirements

Target CPA seeks conversions at an average target cost. Individual conversions can cost more or less. A target is not a guarantee that every booked job will fall below a fixed price.

Target ROAS requires conversion values and has campaign-specific eligibility rules. Google's current Search and Shopping guidance specifies at least 15 conversions in the past 30 days at the conversion-tracking level. Do not substitute a blanket 50-conversion threshold for every campaign type.

Review the relevant requirements, tracking quality, budget, and business goal before changing strategy. Do not consolidate campaigns solely to cross an invented threshold when their services require different settings.

Define values honestly

A submitted form, qualified inquiry, booking, completed job, and received payment are different events. Label each clearly and decide which outcomes should guide bidding.

If assigning an expected value to a lead, document the observed booking probability and economic assumptions behind it. Do not assign arbitrary values based only on whether the request sounds urgent.

Expected revenue, contribution margin, and realized revenue should remain distinct. A ROAS calculation using estimated lead values is not proof of collected sales. Review later-stage outcomes so that multiple events from one opportunity do not unintentionally inflate the value being optimized.

Verify the offline measurement path

Google's GCLID import setup requires more than enabling auto-tagging. The click identifier must be captured and stored with the relevant prospect before it can accompany the later event.

Enhanced conversions for leads can supplement measurement with appropriately collected first-party data. Verify the identifiers, permissions, timestamps, conversion actions, duplicate handling, and import results for the chosen method.

Check the current Data Manager options and your CRM's supported integration. A vendor name alone does not establish that bookings or payments are being transmitted correctly. A booking import also does not prove that the customer has paid.

Evaluate changes with appropriate timing

Google explains that changing a bidding target does not reset prior learning or itself trigger learning status. That does not mean every change is immediately measurable or risk-free.

Record settings and outcomes before a change, allow for conversion delays, and inspect actual spending and lead quality. Avoid fixed rules to raise every target by a particular percentage or switch every low-volume campaign automatically.

Correct broken measurement promptly. Evaluate success using qualified acquisition costs and completed work rather than assuming the algorithm will produce a promised improvement after a fixed number of days.
