Local Services Ads vs. Search Ads: Choose From Your Business Goals

·3 min read

Local Services Ads and Search ads offer different ways to reach prospective customers. Choose based on the services you want to promote, your ability to handle inquiries, the control you need, and the outcomes you can measure. A universal cost range cannot tell you which will work better for your business.

What the formats offer

Local Services Ads use a pay-per-lead model. Eligibility and screening vary by category, country, and advertising route. The current badge is Google Verified. Check qualification requirements and badge guidance before planning around availability.

Google is migrating Local Services accounts into specialized pay-per-lead Performance Max campaigns in Google Ads. These are distinct from standard Performance Max and retain Search and Maps placements. Follow the account migration guidance for the controls that apply to you.

A standard Search campaign lets you configure targeting, write ad messaging, and choose a destination page. Keywords and match types help determine eligible searches; they do not provide unrestricted control over every impression. See Google's Search campaign setup and keyword guidance. Search advertisers must also meet Google Ads policies; it is incorrect to say any business can advertise without requirements.

Compare the same business outcome

Do not compare a click price directly with a lead price and call the smaller number better. For each campaign, record spending, qualified inquiries, appointments, completed work, and collected revenue. Include confirmed credits and relevant management costs consistently.

Google's Search measurement guidance distinguishes clicks, cost, and conversions. Check the action behind each reported conversion. A form submission or phone interaction does not necessarily mean a qualified customer booked a job.

Document attribution gaps, duplicate inquiries, and time needed for leads to become work. Do not promise that every click can be traced to a booking. Compare outcomes using the same definitions and a period appropriate to the business's sales cycle.

Decide what to test

  • Consider Local Services Ads when your business is eligible and you can reliably handle the inquiries offered through that format.
  • Consider Search ads when specific messaging and destination-page choices are important to the service you want to promote.
  • Consider both when you can fund, manage, and measure them separately without exceeding your capacity.

Start with a clear objective, spending limit, responsible person, and review point. Running both formats is not a requirement for success or a guarantee of dominating search results. Expand investment when the evidence supports it, and revisit the plan when lead quality, delivery costs, capacity, or measurement changes.
