Performance Max for Contractors: Check Measurement Before Expanding Spend
Evaluate Performance Max by the work it helps your business acquire and the cost of serving that work. Before expanding spend, confirm what the campaign is being asked to optimize and whether those recorded actions match your business objective.
Identify the campaign type
Standard Performance Max uses Google AI across multiple advertising channels to pursue selected conversion goals. It does not mean every campaign must spend on every channel simultaneously. Start with Google's product overview.
Local Services accounts migrating into specialized pay-per-lead Performance Max campaigns are different: those retain Search and Maps placements. Use the migration guidance for that campaign type rather than applying a standard Performance Max playbook unchanged.
Check the actions used for bidding
Inspect the campaign's selected goals and conversion actions. Google distinguishes primary actions used for bidding with an applicable standard goal from secondary observation actions. Custom goals are an exception: included secondary actions can also be used for bidding. See the conversion-action guidance.
Document what each action represents: a form receipt, qualified call, appointment, or completed job. Check for duplicate measurement when both a Google Ads tag and an Analytics import represent the same outcome. Separate genuine funnel stages when they serve different reporting purposes, and decide deliberately which stage should guide bidding.
Do not assume call length proves qualification. Compare available call outcomes with your qualification rules before choosing a duration proxy. Likewise, a thank-you page visit should not be treated as a successful inquiry unless the tracking reliably represents one.
Use audience information appropriately
Audience signals are optional suggestions. Performance Max can reach people outside those suggestions, as explained in Google's audience-signal guidance. A customer list does not guarantee a particular learning period or result.
Before using Customer Match, check account eligibility and whether the data was collected directly from customers for permitted use. Google's Customer Match policy requires appropriate privacy disclosures and consent where applicable. Possessing a CRM export is not, by itself, a complete basis for uploading it.
Inspect reporting before explaining the result
The channel performance report provides campaign and channel-level information. Use it alongside qualified-lead and completed-job records. A high share of Display impressions alone does not prove wasted spending or explain why an inquiry failed to book.
Review search terms and brand exclusions against the campaign's purpose. Google documents these evaluation controls, including monitoring the effect of exclusions. Performance Max negative keywords apply to Search and Shopping inventory, not every channel.
Define a bounded evaluation
Choose a spending limit, responsible owner, intended outcome, and review point. Base the evaluation period on inquiry volume and the time needed to book and complete work. A fixed conversion count cannot make every campaign comparison reliable.
Record material changes and avoid unnecessary simultaneous adjustments. Correct broken tracking, inaccurate offers, or a spending problem when discovered; a learning period is not a reason to leave a known defect unresolved.
Compare qualified acquisition cost and completed work with the alternatives available to your business. Preserve useful existing campaigns when they serve a clear purpose, and expand Performance Max only when the evidence and capacity support it. No universal budget percentage or channel benchmark can make that decision for you.
