Smart-Speaker Search: Test Discovery and Calling for Your Business

·3 min read

A spoken recommendation, a displayed list, a partner request, and a phone call are different outcomes. To evaluate smart-speaker discovery for your business, record what the actual device does instead of assuming that every assistant selects one contractor and immediately dials.

Check which Alexa experience is in use

Amazon's Alexa+ feature guidance describes recommending or comparing home-maintenance professionals through Thumbtack. Amazon also announced additional partner integrations, including Yelp and Angi, for 2026.

These are product and integration descriptions, not guarantees that a particular contractor will be selected. Check current availability in the experience you are using. Do not assume older Alexa behavior, Alexa+, and every partner follow the same path.

Before joining a marketplace, review its actual eligibility, terms, costs, and customer-contact process. Do not join solely because someone promises that registration places your business first in voice recommendations.

Check Google calling requirements

Google's speaker and display calling guidance distinguishes calling methods and their device and country requirements. Google-supported calling requires numbers in Google Contacts.

The documented nearby-business calling flow may ask the user to add the business name and number to contacts. Finding a business is therefore separate from having a configured path to call it. Do not promise an immediate call on every Google device.

Maintain accurate information

Check the business details you control: name, phone number, hours, services, website, and service area. Describe same-day or after-hours service only when that accurately reflects your operation.

Google Business Profile attributes vary by location and category. Use accurate options available to your business rather than assuming every profile has an emergency-service checkbox.

Google describes local ranking in terms of relevance, distance, and prominence. That guidance does not establish the review-count thresholds or fixed spoken-answer format sometimes presented as smart-speaker requirements.

Respect Yelp's review policy

Yelp tells businesses not to ask for reviews. Do not request Yelp reviews from selected satisfied customers as a voice-search tactic, and do not use an invented star-rating threshold to decide which reviews to pursue.

Run a repeatable discovery check

Record the device, assistant version, account settings, language, location context, date, and question. Save the businesses or sources shown and any action the device offers. Keep a direct business-name question separate from a general recommendation request.

Compare incorrect details with the identifiable source. Correct a source error where possible. If your business is absent, do not assume the differences between your profile and a competitor's explain why.

Test any call or booking action only with the business's permission, and label test inquiries clearly. Record actual inquiries and booked work separately from mentions. Use those observations to improve specific information or contact problems without promising permanent voice placement.
