Planning Service Area Pages Around Real Customer Needs

·2 min read

Before adding city pages to a contractor website, decide what customers need to know about your coverage. A clear service-area overview may be enough for some businesses. Others have meaningful differences between locations that deserve separate explanations.

Start with an operational coverage list

Ask the person responsible for scheduling to confirm where each service is available. Record restrictions, appointment requirements and any travel charges that customers need to understand. Check that the website describes current capacity rather than an expansion you have not yet made.

Keep your Google Business Profile consistent with the business you actually operate. Google's representation guidelines distinguish service areas from business locations. A city you serve is not automatically an office you can list.

Decide whether a separate page adds value

For each location, write down the customer question a dedicated page would answer. Perhaps the available services differ, or the estimate process requires a specific explanation. If the only difference is a city name, consider keeping the information on a useful coverage overview.

Google's doorway policy addresses repetitive pages that funnel visitors toward a more useful destination. Make each proposed page useful in its own right. A service-by-city spreadsheet is a planning tool, not a requirement to publish every possible combination.

Prioritize what you can support

Review actual inquiries and jobs, the services you want to offer and the effort needed to maintain accurate information. Existing customer records can help you understand demand, but do not publish private information from those records. New service areas can be described honestly without inventing past work.

Give each proposed page an owner and list the facts still needing confirmation. Do not promise rankings or a fixed time to generate leads. Google's local-ranking guidance includes distance as well as relevance and prominence; publishing a page does not remove those constraints.

Keep the plan manageable

Start with the pages you can explain and maintain well. Review coverage when your operation changes, and use actual customer questions to decide what needs clarification. The practical result is a website that helps people understand whether and how you can serve them.
